Adult Developmental Therapy

Developmental therapy helps adults with developmental disabilities build the skills they need for daily living, socialization, self-help, communication, and greater independence. Our trained professional staff provide it at our Nampa center and out in the community.

What we work on

Skills for a more independent life

Every person's goals are different. These are the areas developmental therapy most often focuses on.

  1. Daily living

The everyday routines of home and community life that build confidence and choice.

  2. Self-help

Personal and self-care skills that mean more independence and less reliance on others.

  3. Socialization

Practicing conversation, cooperation, and friendship in group activities.

  4. Communication

Expressing needs, wants, and ideas in the way that works best for each person.

  5. Community skills

Taking what's learned at the center out into the community, where it matters.

  6. Personal goals

Goals set with each person and their team, written into a plan and tracked over time.

How it works

A plan built around the person

Services begin with assessments by a Developmental Specialist, who writes an individual program plan with clear, personal goals. Our staff then assess, treat, and instruct in a variety of activities for daily living, and the plan grows as skills do.

  • Developmental assessments and an individual program plan
  • Instruction in real activities, at the center and in the community
  • Group activities planned by our Developmental Specialists
  • Annual planning meetings with families and support teams

Questions

Common questions

Don't see your question? Send us a message or call (208) 590-9001.

What is developmental therapy?

Developmental therapy is a service for adults with developmental disabilities that teaches and strengthens skills for daily living, socialization, self-help, and communication, with the goal of greater independence. At Waypoint, trained professional staff provide it at our center in Nampa and in the community.

Is developmental therapy covered by Idaho Medicaid?

Yes. Developmental therapy is a Medicaid-reimbursable service. If you don't have Medicaid, or don't qualify for it, we also offer developmental therapy as private pay.

Who qualifies for adult developmental disability services?

In Idaho, a developmental disability must be chronic, appear before age 22, and substantially limit at least three major life activities, such as self-care, language, learning, mobility, self-direction, independent living, or economic self-sufficiency. Our Medicaid and eligibility FAQ lists the full requirements.

How do we get started?

If you're new to services, start by applying for Idaho Medicaid, then apply to the Bureau of Developmental Disability Services (BDDS). A Targeted Service Coordinator can help with the rest of the process, including choosing Waypoint as your provider. If you already have services, contact us or call (208) 590-9001.
